Nevada's Aaron Ford Wins Democratic Primary, Setting Up Governor Clash With Joe Lombardo

Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford won the Democratic primary for governor on Tuesday, defeating Washoe County Commissioner Alexis Hill and setting up a high-stakes November clash with Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo in one of the nation's most competitive gubernatorial battlegrounds.

Ford, who has served as the state's top law enforcement official since 2019, will now try to wrest back an office Democrats lost in 2022, when Lombardo, the former Clark County sheriff, narrowly defeated then-Gov. Lombardo, for his part, will run on his record as governor and his law enforcement background, arguing that Republican management has steadied the state. Issues likely to dominate the campaign include the cost of living, housing, education and the management of Nevada's tourism-dependent economy, which is acutely sensitive to national economic swings. Las Vegas and Reno will be the central battlegrounds, while turnout in the state's growing suburban communities could prove decisive. Both campaigns are expected to lean heavily on the get-out-the-vote operations that have come to define Nevada's tightly contested elections.
