Ukraine Running Short of Patriot Missiles as Russia Intensifies Ballistic Attack Campaign
American-made air defense interceptors becoming critically depleted as Moscow escalates missile strikes.

Ukraine is rapidly depleting its supply of American-made Patriot air defense interceptors as Russia continues an intensive ballistic missile campaign against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. Ukrainian officials are urgently pleading with the United States and NATO allies for additional interceptor missiles to maintain their air defense capabilities.
The shortage highlights a growing imbalance in the ongoing conflict, where Russia appears to have substantial stockpiles of ballistic missiles while Ukraine struggles to maintain adequate defensive capabilities. Russian forces have been launching increasingly frequent missile strikes, forcing Ukraine to expend its limited supply of high-tech interceptors at an unsustainable rate.
Patriot missile systems represent some of the most advanced air defense technology available to Ukraine, capable of intercepting ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and aircraft. However, each Patriot interceptor costs approximately $3 million, and the complex manufacturing process means replacement supplies cannot be rapidly produced. The United States and other NATO allies face difficult decisions about how many of their own interceptor stockpiles they can spare.
The missile shortage comes at a critical time when Russia appears to be intensifying its attacks on Ukrainian civilian infrastructure and military targets. Ukrainian air defense commanders report that they are being forced to make increasingly difficult choices about which incoming missiles to intercept, potentially leaving some targets vulnerable to attack.
International defense officials acknowledge the urgency of Ukraine's requests but note that Patriot interceptors are in limited supply globally. The situation underscores broader challenges in sustaining Ukraine's defense capabilities over an extended conflict, particularly when facing an adversary with seemingly abundant missile stockpiles. Ukraine's allies are exploring options to increase interceptor production and identify alternative air defense solutions, but these efforts will take time to materialize.
