A 4-Ton SpaceX Rocket Slammed Into the Moon at 5,400 MPH. A Telescope in Chile Caught the Lithium It Threw Up.
The discarded Falcon 9 upper stage that launched two private lunar landers in January 2025 drifted for eighteen months and hit near Einstein Crater at 6:35 UTC Wednesday. Nobody photographed the collision, but the Very Large Telescope read its chemical signature.
A four-ton piece of a SpaceX rocket hit the moon early Wednesday at roughly 5,400 miles per hour, ending an eighteen-month drift that nobody planned and nobody could stop. The impact came at 6:35 UTC — 2:35 a.m. Eastern — near Einstein Crater, a dusty patch on the moon's western limb, right at the hard-to-observe edge between the near and far sides. No telescope on Earth captured the flash. But hours later, the European Southern Observatory said its Very Large Telescope in Chile had picked up the chemical fingerprint of the debris.
"Our VLT detected spectral lines (the 'chemical fingerprints') of sodium and lithium gas in the impact plume lasting for 5-10 minutes after impact," ESO wrote in a post describing the coordinated observing campaign. The sodium almost certainly came from lunar soil kicked up by the collision. The lithium, ESO noted, likely came from the rocket itself.
The object was the spent upper stage of the Falcon 9 that lifted off from Kennedy Space Center on January 15, 2025, carrying two private lunar landers: Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost, which went on to operate for 14 days on the surface, and ispace's Resilience, part of the Japanese Hakuto-R program, which failed on landing. Once the stage finished boosting both spacecraft toward the moon, it was simply released. A combination of solar activity and gravitational nudges eventually put the dead 40-foot cylinder on a collision course.
Boston University's Carl Schmidt said he is "100% certain" his team's observations captured signs of the crash. Retired astrophysicist Jonathan McDowell, who tracked the stage from the ground the night before, was blunter. "There's no doubt in my mind" that the rocket "is now in teeny, little pieces scattered over the moon near Einstein Crater," he told The Associated Press. "As a physicist, I know that what goes up must come down." Dutch researcher Marco Langbroek aimed a telescope at the moon at the appointed minute and came up empty. "We knew this would be a long shot," he said.
Visual proof will have to wait. NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter is expected to pass over the site and photograph the new crater sometime next week. Modeling published in late July by a University of Texas at Austin group led by William Jo predicted the central ejecta spike would reach 45 to 60 miles above the surface, with a lower curtain of debris climbing 10 to 12 miles and spreading outward for well over a hundred.
SpaceX's Julianna Scheiman said this week that the company is working with NASA to prevent future wrecks, and stressed the crash was not deliberate. It is not the first. A Chinese rocket unintentionally struck the moon in 2022, and space-tracking experts believe many more stray stages hit the surface in past decades without anyone noticing. That indifference is getting harder to sustain as the United States and China both push to land astronauts again, and as the tally of abandoned hardware on the lunar surface keeps climbing.
