House Democrats Accuse Trump-Backed 'Freedom 250' of Duping Donors in America's Birthday Cash Grab
A 55-page report alleges donors who thought they were funding the official America250 commission were quietly rerouted to a Trump-aligned group — conduct the authors say may amount to wire fraud.
Democrats on the House Natural Resources Committee released a scathing 55-page report Thursday accusing a Trump-backed organizing group of turning the nation's 250th birthday into what they called "a hotbed of corruption and self-enrichment," through tactics they say could amount to criminal fraud. The report is pointedly titled "From Vanity to Insanity: How the White House Cheated the American People out of their 250th Birthday."
The most serious allegations center on how money was raised. According to the report, donors who intended to give to America250 — the bipartisan nonprofit congressionally chartered to plan the semiquincentennial — were instead handed wire instructions containing the banking details of a separate entity called Freedom 250, including its routing and account numbers. As a result, Democrats allege, contributions meant for the official commission flowed instead to the Trump-aligned group. That deception, the report contends, "could constitute wire fraud."
Beyond the donor-rerouting claims, the report accuses Freedom 250 of funding its programming through what it describes as opaque and questionable avenues, including soliciting foreign funds, misleading contributors and selling access to the president. It also details a protracted struggle over taxpayer dollars. Congress allocated $150 million for the 250th-anniversary celebrations, and committee Democrats say White House officials and America250 had agreed the nonprofit would receive $100 million of that sum. Instead, they allege, officials informed America250 in November that it would get only $50 million — leaving the commission with a $100 million shortfall.
Freedom 250 forcefully rejected the findings. Spokesperson Danielle Alvarez denied the report's claims as "categorically false," dismissing the document as a "partisan smear" produced by minority-party lawmakers with a political axe to grind. The White House has similarly characterized the celebrations as a patriotic success, pointing to the fireworks displays and events staged around the July 4 milestone.
The report arrives against a fraught backdrop. The America250 festivities were already dogged by controversy after President Trump delivered a sharply partisan Independence Day address and severe weather forced the cancellation of a planned parade in Washington. Democrats say their findings warrant further scrutiny from federal investigators, though with the Justice Department under Trump's control, the prospect of an actual criminal inquiry appears remote. Still, the report ensures that a celebration meant to unify the country will instead become another front in Washington's partisan warfare.
America250, formally the United States Semiquincentennial Commission, was created by Congress in 2016 to plan a year of nationwide events marking 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and was designed to operate on a bipartisan basis with members drawn from both parties and from outside government. Democrats on the Natural Resources Committee, which holds jurisdiction over the commission, said their investigation drew on internal communications and financial records. They called on federal investigators to examine whether any laws were broken, even as they acknowledged the political headwinds facing any such inquiry.
