A German Startup Reached Orbit From Inside the Arctic Circle on Its Second Try

A rocket built by a Munich startup reached orbit on Sunday evening after lifting off from a spaceport north of the Arctic Circle, an outcome Europe has been trying to produce for the better part of a decade.
Isar Aerospace's Spectrum, a two-stage vehicle 28 meters long and capable of carrying about a tonne to low Earth orbit, launched from Andoya Spaceport in northern Norway shortly after 8 p.m. GMT. The company called the mission "Onward and Upward." Video from the vehicle cut out roughly 10 minutes into flight as it passed beyond communications range, but the company said Spectrum had reached orbit — the first time, by its account, that a privately developed rocket has done so from continental Europe.
The first attempt did not go well. In March 2025, a Spectrum launched from the same pad and crashed seconds later in an explosion that became the most-watched failure in European commercial spaceflight. What followed was 18 months of redesign, regulatory review and repeated schedule slips tied to technical and safety concerns. Isar now says it intends to build more than 30 rockets a year once serial production begins.
The strategic context matters more than the payload. Europe has no operational small-lift launcher of its own and has spent years buying rides on American rockets, primarily SpaceX's Falcon 9, for satellites that European governments increasingly regard as security infrastructure. Arianespace's heavy-lift Ariane 6 flies rarely and costs far more per kilogram. That dependence has become uncomfortable as NATO members reassess how much of their military communications, navigation and imaging capacity sits on hardware launched by a single foreign company.
"We need capacity. We need independence," German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said, pointing to what he described as a long-standing reliance on other nations. Germany has committed 35 billion euros through 2030 to expand its space capabilities, a figure that dwarfs anything the country has previously spent on the sector and that reflects the same defense-driven logic now reshaping European industrial policy.
Andoya itself is part of the story. The site sits at 69 degrees north, which makes it well suited to polar and sun-synchronous orbits — the trajectories used by Earth-observation and reconnaissance satellites — and it is the only operational orbital launch site on the European mainland. Norway built it as a sounding-rocket range in the 1960s and converted it for orbital launches specifically to give European companies somewhere to fly from.
Success on a second flight does not make a launch company. Isar still has to demonstrate that it can fly repeatedly, on schedule, at a price that competes with rideshare slots on Falcon 9. But the barrier that mattered most — proving that a European private rocket can actually reach orbit from European soil — is no longer standing.
