'He Did Not Deserve to Die': Family Demands Independent Probe After ICE Officer Kills Houston Man

The family of a Mexican immigrant fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer during a traffic stop in Houston is demanding an independent investigation, as the killing became the second ICE-involved shooting in a week and drew condemnation from Democratic lawmakers.

Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was shot around 6:50 a.m. on July 7 in Houston's East End as ICE carried out what the agency described as a "targeted operation," according to officials. Relatives say Salgado Araujo was on his way to finish a construction job with his crew when the encounter turned deadly. They noted that he had lived in the United States for decades and had no criminal convictions.

The Department of Homeland Security offered a sharply different account, alleging that Salgado Araujo was in the country illegally, ignored verbal commands and "weaponized his vehicle" by attempting to run over an officer, who then opened fire in what the agency called self-defense. DHS said his car struck an ICE vehicle during the confrontation. The FBI has taken over the investigation.

For his family, the official narrative rang hollow. "He did not deserve to die. He did not deserve to be reduced to a headline," his son, Ronaldo Salgado, said, describing a father who had built his life around providing his children the American dream through education and hard work. The League of United Latin American Citizens, one of the country's oldest Latino civil rights organizations, demanded a full, independent investigation, the immediate release of all evidence, and accountability for the officer involved.

Democratic members of Congress echoed those calls. Representatives Sylvia Garcia and Christian Menefee, both of Texas, said the investigation must be transparent and its findings made public, warning that a fatal shooting by federal agents during a routine immigration operation demanded answers rather than assurances.

The shooting lands amid an intensifying campaign of interior immigration enforcement that has pushed armed agents into neighborhoods, workplaces and traffic stops across the country, and it has become a flashpoint over the tactics and accountability of an agency operating with expanded authority. Coming just days after another ICE-involved shooting, the death of Salgado Araujo has hardened a debate over whether the government's aggressive posture is putting bystanders and workers in the line of fire.
