Six Stabbed and 24 Arrested After Arsenal's Premier League Victory Parade in London

A celebration of Arsenal's Premier League title turned violent in north London on Monday, with six people stabbed and 24 arrested in the hours surrounding the club's victory parade, the Metropolitan Police said.

Huge crowds packed the streets around the Emirates Stadium to cheer the team as it paraded the trophy through the borough of Islington. The force said it had deployed more than 500 officers to manage the event, which for most of the day passed as a jubilant, family-friendly occasion before disorder flared later in the evening once the bulk of the crowds had dispersed.

Officers said they dealt with six stabbings after the parade wound down. Most of the victims were not seriously hurt, but a man in his 20s was taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition; police later said he had been stabilized. The violence was not confined to the knife attacks: one officer suffered a slash wound to the hand, and another was struck on the head by an object hurled from the crowd.

Of the 24 people arrested, 10 were detained on suspicion of assaulting police, including one accused of racially abusing an officer. The remaining arrests spanned offenses including sexual assault, grievous bodily harm, possession of a knife, and being drunk and disorderly. Emergency crews also rescued roughly 75 people who had climbed onto bus shelters, traffic lights and other structures to get a better view of the players, an indication of just how densely the route was packed and how quickly a festive crush can tip into danger.

The celebration marked a milestone for the club and its fans, who had waited more than two decades for a top-flight title since the unbeaten "Invincibles" side of the 2003-04 season. That long drought helped draw the enormous crowds that turned out to fete the team, swelling the streets of Islington far beyond an ordinary match-day throng and stretching police resources across a sprawling parade route. For the club, the day was meant to cap a triumphant campaign; instead, much of the post-parade coverage centered on the casualties and the arrests rather than the silverware.

The Met thanked the overwhelming majority of fans for celebrating peacefully while condemning the minority responsible for the disorder. The trouble cast a shadow over what was meant to be an unalloyed day of triumph for Arsenal supporters, coming days after a separate wave of violence across Europe tied to the Champions League final and renewing scrutiny of crowd safety at major football celebrations.
