Maine Senate Candidate Graham Platner Confronts Disclosure His Wife Made Over Explicit Texts

The wife of Graham Platner, the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in Maine, told his campaign in 2025 that he had sent sexually explicit text messages to other women early in their marriage, a disclosure that surfaced during the campaign's internal vetting and now hangs over a race that both parties view as pivotal to control of the chamber.

Platner's wife, Amy Gertner, whom he married in November 2023, raised the matter with the campaign as it was getting underway. In comments addressing the episode, Gertner sought to put it in the context of a marriage she described as strong. "I just really wanted to make sure that everyone knows that Graham and I have a great marriage," she said, adding that the couple "work on our mental health every day" through counseling.

Platner, for his part, did not dispute the account and framed it as a difficult chapter the couple had worked through. "Amy and I went through something hard — because of me," he said. "We did the work, and I'm grateful for her every hour." The acknowledgment is the latest in a series of controversies that have dogged his candidacy almost from the moment it began.

Platner has previously faced scrutiny over old internet comments and a tattoo resembling a Nazi symbol, which he later had covered. He has attributed some of his past problematic views to post-traumatic stress disorder linked to his military service. Despite the turbulence, he has consolidated significant support on the party's left, winning endorsements from Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren after Maine Governor Janet Mills dropped out of the Democratic primary in April, clearing much of the field.

The stakes extend well beyond Maine. Platner is positioning himself to challenge longtime Republican Senator Susan Collins, who has held the seat since 1997 and is one of the chamber's most durable incumbents. Maine has a long history of splitting its tickets, and Democrats consider the seat crucial to their hopes of retaking the Senate majority. Collins has survived repeated, well-funded challenges before, often outperforming polls that predicted her defeat.

Whether the disclosures about Platner's past damage his standing with general-election voters — or are absorbed as old news already aired and addressed by the candidate and his wife — could help determine which party holds the majority after the next election. For now, his campaign is betting that voters will judge him on the marriage he describes as repaired rather than the messages that nearly upended it.
