Tiger Woods Arrested on DUI Suspicion After SUV Overturns on Jupiter Island Road Where He Was Previously Caught Asleep at the Wheel

Golf legend Tiger Woods was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence Thursday afternoon after his Land Rover SUV clipped a trailer, overturned, and skidded along South Beach Road on Jupiter Island, Florida — the same stretch of road where he was found asleep at the wheel in a car in 2017. He was released from Martin County Jail shortly before midnight after an eight-hour hold, officials confirmed Friday.

The crash occurred before 2 p.m. when Woods attempted to pass a pickup truck hauling a small pressure-cleaning trailer, according to Martin County Sheriff William Snyder. Woods's vehicle struck the back of the trailer, causing the SUV to tip onto its driver's side and slide along the roadway before coming to rest. Neither Woods nor the truck's driver suffered injuries. The road was temporarily closed while deputies processed the scene.

A breathalyzer test showed no alcohol in Woods's system. However, Woods declined to submit to a urine test that would detect prescription drugs or other controlled substances. Deputies and investigators said they believe 'impairment may have been caused by medication,' though a search of the vehicle turned up no substances. Because he refused the urine test, he now faces a misdemeanor charge of refusal to submit to a lawful test in addition to a misdemeanor count of DUI with property damage, relating to minor damage to the trailer. Both charges are misdemeanors under Florida law.

The incident is the latest in a string of troubling incidents involving Woods and motor vehicles. In February 2021, he was seriously injured when his SUV went off a road in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, at a speed investigators called excessive, with the vehicle rolling over multiple times. That crash shattered his right leg in multiple places and required extensive surgery, nearly ending his career. In the 2017 incident near Jupiter, deputies said Woods told them he had been taking multiple prescription medications. He later acknowledged entering a treatment program.

Woods's agent did not respond to requests for comment Friday. The PGA Tour said in a brief statement that it was aware of the arrest and had been in contact with Woods's team. Woods, 50, has continued to compete sporadically over the past several years despite chronic physical limitations following the 2021 crash. He made a celebrated return to the Masters Tournament in 2022 and has competed in select events since, though never returning to his previous dominant form. His attorney said in a statement Friday that Woods was cooperating fully with authorities and declined further comment pending review of the charges.
