Former Virginia Lt. Governor Justin Fairfax Found Dead With Wife in Apparent Murder-Suicide
Fairfax, once seen as a rising Democratic star, had recently filed paperwork exploring a congressional run. Police said no other individuals were believed to be involved.
Former Virginia Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax was found dead Thursday alongside his wife in what authorities described as an apparent murder-suicide at the couple's home in Fairfax County, according to law enforcement officials. The Fairfax County Police Department said officers responding to a welfare check discovered both individuals with gunshot wounds. Justin Fairfax, 46, once considered a rising star in Democratic politics, was pronounced dead at the scene. His wife, Colia Fairfax, was also deceased. Authorities said the investigation was ongoing but that no other individuals were believed to be involved.
Fairfax served as Virginia's 41st Lieutenant Governor from 2018 to 2022 and was seen as a potential candidate for governor before his political career was derailed by sexual assault allegations made by two women in 2019. Fairfax strenuously denied both allegations and was never charged with a crime. He subsequently launched multiple defamation lawsuits against media organizations that had covered the allegations, and recently announced a renewed attempt at a political comeback, having filed paperwork to explore a congressional run in Virginia's 11th Congressional District.
The news sent shockwaves through political circles in Virginia and Washington. Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin released a brief statement offering condolences to the Fairfax family and asking for privacy to be respected as investigators worked at the scene. Former Virginia Governor Ralph Northam, who served alongside Fairfax, said he was heartbroken and asked for thoughts and prayers for all affected. Prominent Democratic figures who had worked with Fairfax during his time in office expressed disbelief and grief in statements shared on social media throughout the day.
Fairfax was a Harvard Law graduate and former federal prosecutor who had built a reputation as an eloquent and ambitious politician in the mold of Barack Obama, whom he often cited as an inspiration. His 2017 victory in the lieutenant governor race — running as a Black Democrat in a statewide Virginia election — was seen at the time as a historic achievement and a sign of Virginia's shifting political landscape. The sexual assault allegations that emerged in February 2019, two women who said Fairfax had assaulted them years earlier, ended that momentum almost overnight.
Crisis counselors have been dispatched to the couple's neighborhood, and the Fairfax County Police Department urged anyone who may have information relevant to the investigation to come forward. The medical examiner's office is expected to conduct autopsies to formally establish cause of death. Mental health advocates noted Friday that resources including the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline are available around the clock for anyone struggling with thoughts of self-harm.
