Ford Recalls 1.4 Million F-150 Pickup Trucks Over Dangerous Transmission Downshift Defect

Ford Motor Company is recalling approximately 1.4 million F-150 pickup trucks due to a transmission defect that can cause vehicles to unexpectedly downshift into second gear, potentially resulting in loss of vehicle control and an elevated crash risk. The recall, announced Thursday, is one of the largest automotive safety actions in recent Ford history.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued the safety recall covering F-150 vehicles equipped with the six-speed automatic 6R80 transmission manufactured between March 12, 2014, and August 18, 2017. According to NHTSA documentation, "a loss in signal between the transmission range sensor and the powertrain control module transmission can cause certain F-150 trucks to unexpectedly downshift into second gear, which could result in a loss of vehicle control."

The technical root cause involves degradation of electrical connections within the transmission lead frame — a critical internal wiring assembly. Over time, the combination of thermal cycling from engine heat and road vibration causes these connections to deteriorate. When that happens, the Powertrain Control Module receives a momentary false signal from the Transmission Range Sensor, triggering an unintended downshift into second gear. The resulting abrupt reduction in wheel speed can cause rear tires to slide until the vehicle decelerates, creating a hazardous situation particularly at highway speeds or in wet conditions.

Ford confirmed it is aware of two injuries and one accident that may be related to the defect. While the number of reported incidents is relatively small given the 1.4 million vehicles affected, safety regulators determined the potential for serious harm warranted a mandatory recall action. Affected vehicles may display warning signs before a failure event, including an illuminated malfunction indicator light or a wrench warning light on the instrument cluster.

Owners will receive interim notification letters beginning April 27 through May 1, with final remedy notifications following between July 13-17, 2026. Repairs are free of charge. Owners should bring their F-150 to a Ford or Lincoln dealership, where technicians will reprogram the Powertrain Control Module with revised calibration software designed to filter out the false signal and prevent the erroneous downshift.

The F-150 has been America's best-selling vehicle for more than 40 consecutive years, making this recall significant not just in scale but in public visibility. The affected models represent hundreds of thousands of trucks still in daily use across the country by contractors, farmers, small business owners, and working families who depend on them. Ford said it has the capacity and parts supply to handle the recall volume, though logistics for 1.4 million vehicles will stretch the repair process across several months.

Owners uncertain whether their specific vehicle is affected can check their Vehicle Identification Number against the NHTSA database at nhtsa.gov or call Ford's customer service line at 1-866-436-7332. The company urged owners not to delay scheduling an appointment once notification letters arrive. In the interim, owners should pay close attention to any dashboard warning lights and have the vehicle inspected promptly if they appear.

The recall comes as the automotive industry continues to navigate an era of increasing regulatory scrutiny over vehicle safety. NHTSA has been particularly active in recent years in compelling manufacturers to address defects discovered through consumer complaint data and field reports, even where injury rates are relatively low relative to vehicles on the road.
